How to Prepare for Your Headshot or Branding Session

Before your headshot or branding session, think about where your photographs will appear and what you want them to communicate. A LinkedIn profile, a company website, and a collection of social media images can call for different approaches.

At WTL Photography Studio in Port St. Lucie, we start by talking through those goals. Here are a few ways to prepare so we can make the most of your session together.

Tell us how you’ll use your photographs

Do you need a close-up for a professional directory? A welcoming image for your website? Photographs that show you doing your work?

Share those details during your consultation. If your employer has requirements for the background, framing, or image dimensions, send them before the session.

For branding photographs, let us know about your business, the people you serve, and the impression you want to make. A few examples from your website or marketing materials can help us understand your direction.

Choose clothing that fits comfortably

Start with clothing that fits well and feels appropriate for your work. Try everything on beforehand, including the pieces that may sit outside a close-up crop.

Solid colors are often a useful starting point. Small, busy patterns and large logos can draw attention away from your face, although a company logo may be appropriate for some branding images.

Check for wrinkles, lint, and missing buttons. Bring your clothing on hangers when possible, and discuss your planned outfits with us in advance. The number of outfit changes will depend on your selected collection.

Plan your grooming ahead of time

Choose a hairstyle and grooming routine you feel comfortable with. If you’re planning a haircut or trying a new look, give yourself time to settle into it before your appointment.

If you wear makeup, aim for a finish that feels like you and suits the professional image you want to present. If you’d like hair or makeup services, ask about the available options when planning your booking.

Bring a small touch-up kit with anything you normally use, such as a comb, lip color, or powder.

Bring items that have a purpose

For branding sessions, a few relevant items can help show what you do. Depending on your work, that might include a laptop, a notebook, tools, or a product you create.

We’ll discuss these beforehand so they support the photographs we’re planning. You don’t need to bring everything from your workspace.

If you normally wear glasses, bring them. We can work with lighting and positioning while keeping your everyday appearance in mind.

You don’t need to practice every pose

It’s fine to look at photographs for inspiration, but you don’t need to arrive with a set of poses memorized.

During the session, we’ll guide your posture, hand placement, and where to look. We can work toward different expressions depending on your goals—from an approachable smile to a more composed professional portrait.

Tell us if there’s something you’re concerned about. That conversation helps us guide you.

Give yourself time to arrive comfortably

Confirm the location and your session details beforehand, and allow enough travel time so you aren’t rushing.

Before we begin, we’ll review the looks we’ve planned and any priorities you’ve shared. A little preparation gives us more room to focus on creating photographs you can use confidently.

Let’s plan photographs for your next step

Whether you need an updated headshot or a broader collection of branding images, we’d love to hear what you’re working toward.
